the night sings lullabies in my ear

Wow! It has been soooo looooongggg!!!

I mentioned before that TXT’s (Tomorrow X Together) Nap of A Star is my favorite song in their EP. It really struck something in me because I can’t sing it but I haven’t stopped thinking about it that one night, words just came in loosely inspired by the song and I just let it go…

I hope you like it!

Reviewing Tomorrow X Together’s The Dream Chapter: STAR

BTS’ brother group, Tomorrow X Together finally debuted on March 4, I’ve been so curious of the direction they will be taking, and I trust Bighit enough to know that they will create an entirely new, original concept for them.

Okay, let’s dive in!

  1. Blue Orangeade

Is the perfect opening song!

An opening song is like an appetizer for the ears preparing us for what we’re about to hear. In this case, since this is only their debut, they’re giving us a variety of flavors with one base: THEM.

Blue Orangeade is the first song they performed on the Debut Showcase and I immediately thought of orange soda when I heard it, it’s sweet and it tickles your throat and I love it. A day after I heard it, I started singing the last part of the chorus repeatedly and found myself adding in the same “ooohhh” sound in Bruno Mars’ 24 Karat, and I thought, maybe the song has funk elements in it, because my dad always says that Bruno Mars’ music has funk elements in it, which made me like it more. (I’m a hyung line stan, and I always found myself rapping with Yeonjun even though I don’t know either 2pac and Biggie Biggie)

The lyrics tickle me as well. It’s less poetry but it oozes wordplay (which is also a cute element when messing with poetry, what the hell am I trying to prove). It kinda reminds me of BTS’ I Like It and Coffee, which plays with metaphors of social media (the like button) and coffee to describe a broken relationship (they’re cute songs, listen to them). This one toys with complimentary colors to describe the uniqueness of their relationship, how they’re of opposite personalities, they like different things, and yet they work. (Like blue and orange) A particular lyric that I’ve been obsessing with just, well I’m obsessed with it:

“-1 + (+1), I can stay young (0) cuz of youUuUu”

** The Korean word for 0 is pronounced as “yong”

  1. Crown

Is fit for a title song.

So, it’s bubblegum pop-y, and it’s so rare for me to like bubblegum pop, but with them I expected it and if you listen to it enough, it grows on you. (well me, it grew on me)

I find it cool the layers of harmonies they added in their music; during their first win, in their encore performance, that was the first time I heard the track without them singing and I was struck with how simple it sounded (to me, if you know what I mean) and I just thought that this track, was really designed to be THE title track, they deprived us of their voices in the teasers and here it’s all out there. Like, high notes and all. Also, I love Bighit’s drops, it always sounds unique and original.

The lyrics though! Before writing the final review, I have a long list of my exact thought process while listening and reading the lyrics, and it is with this song that I found so many complex messages.

Paired with the bubblegum pop sound, the lyrics are like a fairytale description of growing up. Using the headache and the rising of horns to realize that “oh, I’m changing”; it is in this stage isn’t it? That we do our best to fit in, even though we are all different? In a way, it’s about being acquainted with reality, when you’re different everybody tries to tear you down, afraid to face their own uniqueness, and we start wondering if there is something wrong with us, “Is there light? Even for the devils?”

I understand why some would assume that it’s a love song, and in a way, it is. But to me, I’d dedicate it to the people I’ve met that has accepted me and helped me accept myself. Wings and horns are different things, yet they became friends despite this. I think this song is supposed to showcase TXT’s message. BTS’ first song already shows how they want to be a representative of the youth, outwardly accusing us of not following our dreams, of not even trying to know our dreams. TXT comes in with the message that although we are different, we will walk towards tomorrow together. That’s why I thought of my friends, how we have different dreams, different fandoms, and how far away we are from each other, yet, we are holding hands every step of the way, towards tomorrow together.

I’m soft.

  1. Our Summer

Is the song that “compliments their voices so well”.

Soobin ain’t lying.

The lyrics: IMAGERY (that’s it)

It’s just so pretty—I can’t even.

“Reality loses strength, even the earth is breathing, and the moment becomes eternal.”

  1. Cat and Dog

“IS THAT SONG.”

Or so the majority of the fans say. I’m sorry, I’m not a fan of hip hop. I mean it’s a bop, but it didn’t bop me enough.

I like the light (piano chords?) in the chorus though. Also, TAEHYUN’S VOICE and YEONJUN’S GROWL. Also, whenever I do have to listen to it (like for this post) I always jam to the “biwo nae jali” part.

If BTS has Boy In Luv, TXT has Cat and Dog. Lyric-wise, it has the same message and the same feel. I do want to know why he feels like Cinderella though. (also, I might have read too many hybrid fanfics)

  1. Nap of a Star

Is my favorite song.

This song is the pinnacle of their harmonies in the album. It really shows that, yes, they can ALL sing.

If star showers were as light as feathers, this is what they’d sound like. In the audio, the harmonies are played as a whisper, it’s like a lullaby, I can’t stop imagining being in nature at night, their voices sound like the wind singing lullabies in my ear.

(I have a lot more to say about this, because I love this, but they’re not coherent or understandable because I love this, love is assdjhjfgif)

I don’t want to think that this is about a breakup, but it’s almost obvious that it could be. It could still be something else like a loved one that has passed away, a long-distance relationship, a memory. It’s sad yet calming, like Spring Day it has hope in it. I can’t highlight just one line of lyrics because the entire thing seams weaved into each other.

I know that I made a lot of comparisons to BTS but it’s because I don’t know how to describe how I think of it other than give it an example. It is so satisfying to confirm that they will be their own artists and not an attempt to match with BTS. I love how the album doesn’t tell a story, rather it showcases them and what they can give because they are all so talented. Even if they gave a much lighter sound and concept, they still blew minds and they deserved to be seen as their own. With that much talent, their growth will hopefully be prosperous. I’m looking forward to everything!

Tomorrow X Together, TXT, FIGHTING!!!

edit: I just noticed it now, (after watching them in After School Club) the whole album revolves around the concept of their name. Tomorrow X Together’s name means that although we are different, we run towards tomorrow together in one dream (that’s just at the top of my head). That’s why all of their songs seems to be dedicated to another person or people, and they all seem to treasure and long for them. (“my heart is in mayhem”, it just made it more beautiful, and I’m dumb for not noticing it)
