Twenty Minutes After The Sunrise

Let’s just say we went on vacation for 1 and a half days and it was my first time waking up on a house near the sea and since I woke up earlier than my friends I decided to take a stroll. On this stroll, I was listening to music because music disturbs my toxic thoughts but for once, I didn’t need it, and this is what I wrote once I took my earphones off.

twenty mins after the sunrise

Stray Kids’ Cle 1: Miroh

I’ve been listening to albums whenever I can, looking for one I would love or at least appreciate. Something that satisfies my ears and encourages my mind to think, and since I’ve been more into Kpop lately, I’ve been listening to more Kpop.

Lately, I’ve dived into Stray Kids and this is the first album I’ve heard from them and damn is this gorgeous, fangirling less, let’s dive into this.

miroh

  1. Entrance

In the words of JYP himself, this is too good a song to just be an intro. The feeling I got listening to this song is the same feeling I get when entering Wakanda in Black Panther. Unlike other intro songs which feels like opening a story, this one feels like entering a country, a world that Stray Kids created for themselves and for their fans. The music feels cultural in a way, I know that they possibly took inspiration from actual native music but they know how to make this one theirs.

It’s also cool how we see the deeper meaning of the album; Miro, a Korean word that means maze, tells us that this is supposed to be some kind of journey, we hear that from the French dialogue. So, we are both entering a different world ourselves while diving into their own stories.

  1. MIROH

And the atmosphere of this world and story continues. I get a mythical vibe of some sort, something both ambitious and young, like Icarus wanting to fly and explore but smarter. The lyrics of the song are strong and confident, it feels as if they have already survived the maze; as if they’ve already won.

There is a very city-like/jungle-like vibe in the music, we’re still entering a different world and everything still feels cultural; you know how in a movie when our main character enters a new world the ambiance is usually welcoming but the camera pans back to the main person and adds a level of subjectivity to the welcome song. This is that moment.

  1. Victory Song (승전가)

Now we focus on the subjectivity, the main character pours their passion and enthusiasm out to get where they want to go. This song is full of that passion and enthusiasm, the feeling that they’ve already won escalates here, the very first line in the songs immediately says “listen to this victory song”.

It is still worth celebrating the little things and though this isn’t a little thing, it feels as though they’re celebrating the knowledge that they WILL get where they want to go. This song is still so similar to Miroh in almost every aspect.

  1. Maze of Memories (잠깐의 고요)

Now we focus on the character itself, their individuality. Now, every person has more than one personality and that’s how I choose to interpret the changing of the tempo and mood in this song, we get to finally see them as a human being than just another one-dimensional character in the screen.

The music here reminds me of a cypher, but the only cyphers I’ve heard are those of BTS and they usually diss their haters there. The ambition is in both but lyrically this is more like Whalien that any of BTS’ Cyphers. I love the lyrics, they’re so poetic in expressing their anxiety and determination, my favorite part is Bang Chan’s part simply because he called on the citadel and allowed them to dream. Suddenly, this dream is not just for them but for everybody else as well. That and I just loved that he used the word “citadel”.

  1. BOXER

By this time, the battle begins and the anxiety rises.

I like how in this song, it’s got that fighting spirit and both the energies of the last two songs. I like how they talk about how they’re young and ambitious but they won’t abuse it, rather they’ll use it to defend or bring down those that deserve to be defended or brought down.

A comment in youtube mentioned how the bell in the song actually signals the levels of the game, putting us literally inside the boxing ring, though we only know what’s happening inside the mind of our main character.

  1. Chronosaurus

This song is a lot more about the anxiety of time running out. I like how the lyrics perfectly describe the music. When I listen to this song I think of a weird sequence of a dinosaur-like creature with a clock head chasing the main character to the ends of the earth or said character stuck inside an hourglass not knowing what to do to get out.

It’s weird that when I listened to this, it makes me want to move, not knowing that it reminds me of my own personal struggles with this kind of anxiety.

  1. 19

The image in my head for this song is like a rewinding slide show. The rapping is weirdly melodic showing off Han’s style really well. The mood is very sad and nostalgic, I personally didn’t like the distorted autotuned vocals in the background but it provided the atmosphere of a fading childhood. With the story this song is telling, I almost felt like it ended too soon, like there’s so much more you can tell here, but youth is a fickle friend we don’t know how to let go off and only a few people have the ability to word how that feels. (and it’s different for each of us)

  1. Mixtape # 4 (Broken Compass)

The album closes with a hopeful familial feeling. I never thought I’d find a hip-hop song that will give me the feeling like I’m sailing on the ocean.

The title, “Broken Compass”, and the lyrics telling the story is a reflection of how inconsistent the path is towards a dream. A dream in itself is a vague picture that our characters wish to hold up in the light to make it real. Funny how the atmosphere is on the ocean because the ocean in itself is also inconsistent, and on this ship with a broken compass everything always gets topsy-turvy. That’s where the familial feeling sets in because we should never become a slave to our own dreams. These boys have each other and that is a dream in itself when one falls, 8 others hold him up. This is a family story, but this ain’t the end.

So far each song managed to paint a picture in my head. Umu once said that they create duets between the instruments and their voices and now I know what she meant. Each song has beautiful lyrics and the music (no matter if it’s my style or not) compliments it perfectly.

There are imperfections in every song which are more obvious especially when it is not the kind you listen to most of the time (me), but the sincerity in their writing glows and the flow of the album is beautiful, the story is familiar but they told it in their own language that nobody else can copy. Not to mention, they brought us to a new world.

The album echoes its name, a maze. A maze where we don’t know where it leads to, will it be heaven or hell. The play with letters in the title reminds me of Hellevator, they’ve been in this journey for quite some time and they choose to write their story through music, and through this music, so many are able to feel like they’re not alone. There is no ending to the story in this album, it goes on, where? Even they don’t know, but no matter what, they’re taking us with them.

What I love the most in this album is the imagery. Each song is so poetic both musically and lyrically, the music compliments the singer and the lyrics and the other way around. It’s perfect teamwork.

Comfort Movies

I can’t seem to concentrate on studying unless I have some kind of sound in my ears. Most days it’s music I use, alternating playlists every other day, but when that doesn’t seem to work, I and my mom have our comfort movies. Comfort movies are movies that we love and watch whenever we need to wind down or when calming music doesn’t tame the fire in our veins. We’ve watched these movies so much that we don’t need to look at the screen to know what is happening, we just pause it once in a while when our favorite scene comes up.

I have quite a listing habit and I like to ask the people closest to me about their favorite stuff and my mom has been a victim of most of my questions, I always plan to write about those lists but never get to, somehow, I think my mother knows that too, so she suggested this, and here I am.

Also, since it’s summer in my place, I need to get my hands useful creatively before any more of my ideas fade away. So here are mine and my mother’s comfort movies:

  1. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) – John Madden; Maggie Smith and Dev Patel

What do you like about this movie?

Mom: It’s fun! And it’s about old people, nice old people.

  1. The 2nd Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015) – John Madden; Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Dev Patel

There are no criteria for comfort movies, just comfort, and warmth. It was very amusing for me to find mom looking very happy watching a bunch of old people stumbling through life so I watched it with her and I loved it. It’s very refreshing for me seeing old people who are typically portrayed as wise suddenly struggle with life the way the young ones also are. It’s proof of how life never ends and how we’re never ever too late to discover ourselves.

  1. Little Women (1994) – Gillian Armstrong; Winona Ryder

comfort movies 2

In the dorm, I watch this at night when I’m having trouble sleeping. It reminds me of home. Not of what it really is like but what it should be. I love that it could low key be a feminist movie because women don’t have to know martial arts to prove their strength, we can be feminine and still be strong just watch these women handle life so gracefully and uniquely and remind us the importance of kindness, moral courage, imagination, and duty.

  1. Chocolat (2000) – Lasse Hallstrom; Juliette Binoche

comfort movies 3

I’m not really sure why…it might be chocolate. Or the charm of Vienne’s beautiful character…and chocolate.

  1. Sabrina (1995) – Billy Wilder; Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford

Sabrina (1995)

Sabrina in herself is charming in her own uniquely elegant way and I just fell for her. But what I love the most here, other than the clothes is how this is one of the few none action films where the woman saves the guy and not the opposite way around. I like the twist in the ending ( it’s a twist for me) when the younger (player) brother is the one that slaps Harrison Ford across his face to tell him what he’s missing. There is a sense of gentility and humanity in this film and the story that comforts me the way my lullabies usually do.

  1. Notting Hill (1999) – Roger Mitchell; Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts

comfort movies 5

Of all my favorite non-Austen love stories at the top of my head, this one stays the most special. I’ve had a soft spot for this film ever since I was younger (10-ish?) and it never really went away. The iconic line that Julia Roberts says has been copied and pasted on almost every other social media account by tons of people but it still only feels right when you hear it in this movie. I also love how the characters feel so genuine and flawed and not stereotypically pretty. I think that this is truly a modern fairytale.

The Austen Pile

My mother adores Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, those and Sabrina were her staple comfort movies; I only started appreciating Austen after I read her book, I watched these movies at such a young age, of course, to truly feel whatever it is my mother feels back then. I’m not sure where the hype started for us to start looking for more Austen adaptations but these are the ones we’ve gathered and the ones we keep repeating like it’s an album rather than a movie.

  1. Pride and Prejudice (2005) – Joe Wright; Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden

I am curious about what happens to Kitty after that chapter in her life.

  1. Sense and Sensibility (1995) – Ang Lee; Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet

And another chapter on character dynamics and siblings with chemistry I envy.

  1. Emma (1996) – Diarmuid Lawrence; Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong

Mom’s favorite movie quote by Mr. Knightley.

  1. Mansfield Park (2007) – Iain B. Macdonald; Billie Piper and Blake Ritson

The Crawfords: people who fell for our main characters but does not deserve them; Fanny: an angel.

  1. Persuasion (2007) – Adrian Shergold; Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones

I think the camera work is terrible but this is my brother’s favorite which came as a surprise for us, and the acting is superb, though I do think Frederick could’ve kissed Anne faster.

  1. Northanger Abbey (2007) – Jon Jones; Felicity Jones and J.J. Field

This gives me more of a childlike feel especially from Catherine, I think her innocence is what drew Henry to her. It does not mask the mystery and mischief of Bath but I like how that feeling never disappeared which shows that this is Catherine’s story.

Simply put, I don’t really know how to write about these movies but I love them and they calm me down, and I thought I should still pay homage to them.

What do you guys think? Do you love these movies as much as I do? What are your comfort movies?

Map of the Soul: PERSONA

I always plan to write about BTS when they drop an album, but time has passed so much and I’m really terrible at time management, but I missed writing and this is at the top of my list, so despite the doubts, I’ll be pushing through because I need to practice and this is BTS so, let’s start.

map of the soul persona

  1. Intro: Persona

As a girl who grew up on rock music, the first thing I noticed are the rock elements in this song. Of course, I am no music expert, nor do I study music, I’m just a music lover, but living with a dad that is in love with rock music of any kind, when they dropped the comeback trailer, I immediately thought, “Is this rock or is it just me?”, and that made me anticipate the upcoming tracks because this is BTS and this is Bighit, I don’t think coincidence exists in their vocabulary.

Like any other BTS rap song that drops, one of the challenges I encounter is chasing the lyrics through the subtitles with the beat. Another challenge is deciphering it because they always write meaningful, layered lyrics. In the process of deciphering it, there are Korean references I don’t understand because I am not Korean and in this case, psychology references I have not studied yet, so may we all take a moment to thank all the Armys out there that decipher them for us, and those that share their theories, I’d be dumber without y’all.

While I was thinking of what to write as my description for this song (which includes watching a handful of reaction videos and reading theories and comments, just so I can fill that empty part of my brain and stifle other questions inside it) I thought that this song is written like a speech. I found it fascinating that despite the previous album being inspiring and uplifting, there is still a question of “who am I?”. Which just shows that the process of getting to know ourselves never ends. Also, despite RM rapping fluidly effortlessly, showing off how good he is in his craft, the message behind it tells a whole different story. BTS really equates to honesty. One of the reasons why I thought it was like a musical form of a speech, is because it’s written in a distinct manner and it’s delivered confidently, also, it goes on and on, nothing feels repeated. The reason why I thought it’s a speech rather than a monologue is that usually in a musical, monologues still have choruses, this one doesn’t, and RM doesn’t make it sound as emotional as a monologue usually would.

Intro_ Persona

  1. 작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy with Luv) ft. Halsey

Whatever direction I thought their title song was going to be…it did not go there. And, I’d be lying if I said the music in this song is as complex or as hard-hitting as their other title songs have been, but I love that it was meant to be that way. I think BTS has reached a point where they do not have to prove their artistry, and they do not need to blow our minds to touch our hearts. This song is everything light and fluffy, from the music to the lyrics to the video to their outfits, as an Army I have never felt this much happiness from a song by them which also shows how much emotion they put when they create music. The song just exudes a light, happy vibe that we can only expect from BTS.

The lyrics need no explanation, Armys can identify the main points in a heartbeat. We’ve been on this journey with them for so long, even if you became an Army just yesterday, you’re already a part of it. I love how this is a gift to us that seems so mainstream to others except for us which shows how unique our relationship is with BTS; we’re mutually special to each other.

My Post

  1. Mikrokosmos (소우주)

The intro of the song already sounded like twinkling stars, and as I listened to this it became my favorite song before I’ve even heard the entire album. Mikrokosmos means that we have galaxies inside of us, that we are living stars ourselves and every night, the earth is like the cosmos because when the sky turns black, we come out shining.

And the song musically describes that; I don’t need to read the lyrics to feel that, from the music itself, it’s either lifting me up to the heavens or speeding me on an empty highway. It doesn’t take too long for this song to make me smile, the intro plays and my heart just settles and I forget that this is actually a fast paced song because all I feel is love and warmth and it just radiates to every nook in my body and it reminds me that yeah, I’ll be okay.

Somebody posted on Twitter that this song, lyrically, can be compared to RM’s Moonchild. Moonchild is a song that I identify with, and when I recalled the lyrics of the song (because I can only get the gist and appreciate the music when I play it on my phone), Mikrokosmos sounds like an answer, a reprise of some sort in a much lighter view.

Mikrokosmos

  1. Make It Right

Out of BTS’ entire discography, this song is the first song that directly reminded me of western music because it reminded me too much of Lauv’s Paris In the Rain, and it made me nervous for a split second because they might be slipping away from their roots. (second half of the split second says, “gurl, this is BTS, don’t doubt them”) I don’t know why finding out that Ed Sheeran participated in this song validates the new sound…but it somehow does. There is something non-BTS about this song (for me), and somehow finding out that Ed Sheeran fits in the picture helps me understand it.

Lyric-wise, I trace this back to Love Maze and DNA. To me, Love Maze is an answer to DNA and Make It Right is an answer to Love Maze. There are some lyrics that connect them by similarity and maturity.

To me, almost every love song by BTS is dedicated to Armys and even if it isn’t, that’s the beauty in how they write their lyrics, it is adaptable and relatable for every relationship that we care about. The entire album (starting from the 2nd track to the 6th track according to our leader) is dedicated to Armys, and though we are the only ones who can translate the parts that show that it is dedicated to us, take away that factor, and we can still dedicate these songs to somebody else.

The simplicity of the sound in this song reminds me of the Korean title of Boy with Luv (A Poem for the Small Things), and the lyrics echo that. They talk about how their trophies and golden mics don’t matter to them as much as our presence does. Armys have always been there with BTS from the very beginning, we are their beginning, in the end, after all, they’ve achieved, they always come back to us, we are their…

Make It Right

  1. HOME

The paragraph above already explained what this song means but as I relisten to this and rewatch the lyric videos I notice how they reject their own physical million dollar homes and say that we are their home in a very party like manner. (If that makes sense)

This song is the party song in the album, it’s the song I can envision being played in the clubs with sweaty dancing people grooving to it. Everything about this song is dance-y, and the lyrics say that they’re leaving they’re homes to come home (ARMY); literally, the only time BTS really gets to be with us is when they’re performing live and we’re cheering for them, so it makes sense that all they’re fan songs are sentimental yet groovy; balo geugosi uri Casa.

HOME

  1. Jamais Vu

I love to sing and I love to write which leads to me just focusing mostly on the lyrics and the vocals in a song, which makes this track the ideal track in the entire album because the instruments are tucked in and the voices are fully out, weirdly, that is why I didn’t know what to write about in this track.

Out of all the songs in the album, this one managed to paint a picture more effectively. All the songs keep you moving, this one slows you down. The sudden change of pacing in this track requires some time to recover. In my case, it took ReacttotheK reacting to this (mehe) for me to appreciate it because they dive into the details that I can’t recognize. Out of all the songs though, I think this is the one that will be most entrancing to listen to in 4D.

Jamais Vu

  1. Dionysus

So the rock genre makes it’s return.

To me, this is the Go Go of the album because like Go Go, it took some time for me to understand the message of the song. I remember diving into BTS for the first time, falling in love with the messages, then in comes Go Go with lyrics like YOLO and “spend it like some party” and I just start wondering…what happened? That was my situation here.

(In case your reading this to understand the album, the song is about getting drunk…on art, it’s about how they will just focus on making art.) Like they’re previous creations, I always think the last track is a “pre-intro” to the concept of their next album. If the next one is about Shadow, this track could be a clue on how they will approach that concept. Or at least that’s my theory.

Dionysus

This album exudes love love love. It is one of the most healing pieces of music I have ever heard, and they dropped it at the best possible time: Finals. I usually take my time loving the songs before I decide which to download, but I was in so much need of motivation that I just straight up downloaded the entire thing then rushed to my dorm room to finish a project. The album almost made me dizzy because it was playing so loud at midnight, I had to play it at a respectable volume, but it kept playing, I even fell asleep to it.

I guess the moral of my story is always expect the unexpected with BTS. I thought Love Yourself Tear was already my album, and I thought Answer: Love Myself is already the answer…nope, they can step higher than that, or not, I don’t really know. Just that this album really healed me…again.

Reviewing Tomorrow X Together’s The Dream Chapter: STAR

BTS’ brother group, Tomorrow X Together finally debuted on March 4, I’ve been so curious of the direction they will be taking, and I trust Bighit enough to know that they will create an entirely new, original concept for them.

txt

Okay, let’s dive in!

  1. Blue Orangeade

Is the perfect opening song!

txt taehyun
T A E H Y U N

An opening song is like an appetizer for the ears preparing us for what we’re about to hear. In this case, since this is only their debut, they’re giving us a variety of flavors with one base: THEM.

Blue Orangeade is the first song they performed on the Debut Showcase and I immediately thought of orange soda when I heard it, it’s sweet and it tickles your throat and I love it. A day after I heard it, I started singing the last part of the chorus repeatedly and found myself adding in the same “ooohhh” sound in Bruno Mars’ 24 Karat, and I thought, maybe the song has funk elements in it, because my dad always says that Bruno Mars’ music has funk elements in it, which made me like it more. (I’m a hyung line stan, and I always found myself rapping with Yeonjun even though I don’t know either 2pac and Biggie Biggie)

The lyrics tickle me as well. It’s less poetry but it oozes wordplay (which is also a cute element when messing with poetry, what the hell am I trying to prove). It kinda reminds me of BTS’ I Like It and Coffee, which plays with metaphors of social media (the like button) and coffee to describe a broken relationship (they’re cute songs, listen to them). This one toys with complimentary colors to describe the uniqueness of their relationship, how they’re of opposite personalities, they like different things, and yet they work. (Like blue and orange) A particular lyric that I’ve been obsessing with just, well I’m obsessed with it:

“-1 + (+1), I can stay young (0) cuz of youUuUu”

** The Korean word for 0 is pronounced as “yong”

  1. Crown

Is fit for a title song.

txt hueningkai
H U E N I N G K A I

So, it’s bubblegum pop-y, and it’s so rare for me to like bubblegum pop, but with them I expected it and if you listen to it enough, it grows on you. (well me, it grew on me)

I find it cool the layers of harmonies they added in their music; during their first win, in their encore performance, that was the first time I heard the track without them singing and I was struck with how simple it sounded (to me, if you know what I mean) and I just thought that this track, was really designed to be THE title track, they deprived us of their voices in the teasers and here it’s all out there. Like, high notes and all. Also, I love Bighit’s drops, it always sounds unique and original.

The lyrics though! Before writing the final review, I have a long list of my exact thought process while listening and reading the lyrics, and it is with this song that I found so many complex messages.

Paired with the bubblegum pop sound, the lyrics are like a fairytale description of growing up. Using the headache and the rising of horns to realize that “oh, I’m changing”; it is in this stage isn’t it? That we do our best to fit in, even though we are all different? In a way, it’s about being acquainted with reality, when you’re different everybody tries to tear you down, afraid to face their own uniqueness, and we start wondering if there is something wrong with us, “Is there light? Even for the devils?”

I understand why some would assume that it’s a love song, and in a way, it is. But to me, I’d dedicate it to the people I’ve met that has accepted me and helped me accept myself. Wings and horns are different things, yet they became friends despite this. I think this song is supposed to showcase TXT’s message. BTS’ first song already shows how they want to be a representative of the youth, outwardly accusing us of not following our dreams, of not even trying to know our dreams. TXT comes in with the message that although we are different, we will walk towards tomorrow together. That’s why I thought of my friends, how we have different dreams, different fandoms, and how far away we are from each other, yet, we are holding hands every step of the way, towards tomorrow together.

I’m soft.

  1. Our Summer

Is the song that “compliments their voices so well”.

Soobin ain’t lying.

The lyrics: IMAGERY (that’s it)

It’s just so pretty—I can’t even.

“Reality loses strength, even the earth is breathing, and the moment becomes eternal.”

  1. Cat and Dog

“IS THAT SONG.”

txt yunjun
Y E O N J U N

Or so the majority of the fans say. I’m sorry, I’m not a fan of hip hop. I mean it’s a bop, but it didn’t bop me enough.

I like the light (piano chords?) in the chorus though. Also, TAEHYUN’S VOICE and YEONJUN’S GROWL. Also, whenever I do have to listen to it (like for this post) I always jam to the “biwo nae jali” part.

If BTS has Boy In Luv, TXT has Cat and Dog. Lyric-wise, it has the same message and the same feel. I do want to know why he feels like Cinderella though. (also, I might have read too many hybrid fanfics)

  1. Nap of a Star

Is my favorite song.

txt beomgyu
B E O M G Y U

This song is the pinnacle of their harmonies in the album. It really shows that, yes, they can ALL sing.

If star showers were as light as feathers, this is what they’d sound like. In the audio, the harmonies are played as a whisper, it’s like a lullaby, I can’t stop imagining being in nature at night, their voices sound like the wind singing lullabies in my ear.

(I have a lot more to say about this, because I love this, but they’re not coherent or understandable because I love this, love is assdjhjfgif)

I don’t want to think that this is about a breakup, but it’s almost obvious that it could be. It could still be something else like a loved one that has passed away, a long-distance relationship, a memory. It’s sad yet calming, like Spring Day it has hope in it. I can’t highlight just one line of lyrics because the entire thing seams weaved into each other.

I know that I made a lot of comparisons to BTS but it’s because I don’t know how to describe how I think of it other than give it an example. It is so satisfying to confirm that they will be their own artists and not an attempt to match with BTS. I love how the album doesn’t tell a story, rather it showcases them and what they can give because they are all so talented. Even if they gave a much lighter sound and concept, they still blew minds and they deserved to be seen as their own. With that much talent, their growth will hopefully be prosperous. I’m looking forward to everything!

Tomorrow X Together, TXT, FIGHTING!!!

edit: I just noticed it now, (after watching them in After School Club) the whole album revolves around the concept of their name. Tomorrow X Together’s name means that although we are different, we run towards tomorrow together in one dream (that’s just at the top of my head). That’s why all of their songs seems to be dedicated to another person or people, and they all seem to treasure and long for them. (“my heart is in mayhem”, it just made it more beautiful, and I’m dumb for not noticing it)

Thoughts On: Chocolat

Chocolat
It really isn’t a love story as much as it is a romantic one

War, by definition, is a state or period of fighting between countries or groups. In this case, it is a fight between “chateau and chocolaterie”, a silly fight if you ask me. Living in modern times, even in a Catholic society like the Philippines, the Christian rules here are a little bent to give way to practical, human, pleasures. But then again, this is a country while the setting in this story is a town. From the start of the film, a grown Anouk has already started listing down the unspoken rules of the town. The expectations of the people in this society. The colors are a little bland, almost all black and white, and as the wind rumbles the atmosphere in the church, Vianne walks in, red coat and all.

Red, according to the pictures in Pinterest, signifies passion, confidence, strength, energy, stimulation, excitement, powerful, action, motivation, strong-willed, courage, attention and strength. She embodies all of this in a much warmer state; I’ve always liked to look at the fire in a way that exudes warmth like a fireplace. She knew, from the very beginning that she is different, and she does not apologize for it, but from the moment she expressed that she (1) does not go to church, and (2) has a child but has never been married, the Count has already labeled her enemy in this village. A radical, as the rumors say.

Now, radical, by definition, means very new and different from what is traditional and ordinary. All of which she exactly is, and yet she fights to belong. If the Count would rather her to stay out of their tranquil society, she’d like to be both a part of it and apart from it. Johnny Depp’s character, Roux, had asked her why she troubles herself for these people, why does she care, and she answers, “is that so terrible? Having people expect something from you?” Roux is a radical like Vianne, but he lives atop a floating house, has made a home for himself inside his own heart. Vianne is similar to him in terms of his traveling but I think Vianne inwardly craves to settle, and every time people talk about her in a way that prevents her from serving her chocolates to them, she gets hurt and runs away and tries to build a home all over again.

Now despite her being radical, she does not judge people that are not like her. Nor does she judge them for being like her. Her chocolates and the spinning plate are like symbols of her desire to build a connection between people. She became a soft magnet for people who need a breath of fresh air from an almost rigid society. She became a representation of kindness and acceptance in a place where there is an invisible gate to people who do not meet their standards. The camera in this film sometimes zooms in to the children, even Anouk had a scene where she doubts her mother, you can see the influence of adults to children, how they slowly piece together what the foundation of their home truly is, this is how this town has stayed the same for generations.

But change is inevitable, you can fight it but not forever. Sometimes these unspoken rules prevent people from finding themselves. When Vianne came, she admired Luc for his dark creativity, she became a friend to Josephine, which inspired her to ditch her abusive husband, and she sweetened the sour disposition of Armande Viozin. There is no requirement needed to be kind. She even gave the count milk (or water?) even after he ruined their chocolate hard work that was supposed to be for Easter. Pere Henri’s ending sermon summarizes everything:

Chocolat 1

“I think we can’t go around measuring our goodness by what we don’t do, by what we deny ourselves, what we resist, and who we exclude. I think we’ve got to measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create, and who we include.”

10 Songs: Butterfly

I’m currently making playlists for each of my Top Songs of 2018 in Spotify, and then choosing the top 10 in the playlists and making them mood boards so…yeah…this is the number 1 song.

  1. Butterfly – BTS

Butterfly

  • Co-written by Suga/ Min Yoongi, this song express the fear of losing someone through the simile of a butterfly. The butterfly could be interpreted as representing the ephemerality of time that risks being lost at a moment’s notice. (Genius / Billboard)
  • “It  also mostly seems like the fear of losing someone who brings you so much happiness. There’s also a hint of trying to save someone before they do something they regret or something they won’t come back from.” Justine Micaela

“I still can’t believe it

All of this seems like a dream

Don’t try to disappear.”

      2. Clean – Taylor Swift

Clean

  • Clean is a song about heartbreak written when she found herself in a place she used to spend time with with an old significant other and realizing that she’s “finally clean” (Genius)
  • “Clean” also has a different meaning to fans who’ve had struggles with mental illness, addiction, and abuse – it’s about being quite literally clean.

“Rain came pouring down,

when I was drowning that’s when I could finally breathe.”

     3. Wide Awake – Katy Perry

Wide Awake

  • Katy Perry has described her new single ‘Wide Awake’ as a “dose of reality” and admits that the song deals with much more negative emotions than many of her previous single releases. (capitalfm)
  • It was written during a difficult break-up part of Perry’s life and it was meant as an antithesis to “Teenage Dream”. (wiki)

“I’m wide awake,

yeah, I was dreaming for so long.”

4. Get Home – Bastille

Get Home

  •  “Get Home finds him [Chris] stumbling home from a club, pondering the meaning of it all: it paints him as quite the bar-room philosopher.” (theguardian)
  • “From this song, I sense a depressed tone, with “getting home” really meaning feeling safe and sound again, as one would at their home. The narrator feels scared and alone and may be dealing with very negative thoughts or even panic. The slow breathing in the background seems to be an effort to maintain peace while his mind makes up every worst scenario.” Tango64_x

“There’s a light in the bedroom but it’s dark

Scattered around on the floor all my thoughts.”

5. Tonight I’m Getting Over You – Carly Rae Jepsen

Tonight I'm Getting Over You

“Stuck in a real bad dream, oh man it feels so new to me

Should be in your arms but I’m begging at your feet.”

6. (One of Those) Crazy Girls – Paramore

(One of Those) Crazy Girls

  •  The song is about how crazy anyone, might turn in the event of a painful breakup.
  • This song is one of the very few examples in which Paramore’s lyrics don’t draw from Hayley’s personal experiences. (Genius)

“Are we really over now?

Maybe I can change your mind

As soon as you walk out my door

I’m gonna call a hundred times.”

7. Spring Day – BTS

Spring Day

  • In a short interview in Inkigayo, BTS’ V/ Kim Taehyung answered that they wrote the song thinking of ARMY during the cold winter. (Genius)
  • Billboard stated that “the guys are still pining for their lost love, but they aren’t staying in a one-track mindset. Instead, they use the weather and seasonal metaphors to describe how things get better — a lesson many of their young fans can find comfort in when dealing with relationships, or school, friends, family, their careers or beyond. “

“How long do I have to wait

And how many sleepless nights do I have to spend

To see you

To meet you

8. Let Go – BTS

Let Go

  • This song refers to a relationship that’s about to break. Although the character that the boys portray don’t want it to happen, both sides agree that it is best to let go. (Genius)

“Burned into the back of my head like a tatoo

We can’t return to those days

If I could, I would call your name

No…but I’l accept your blame”

9. Epilogue : Young Forever – BTS

Young Forever

  • Produced by RM/ Kim Namjoon, this lyrics of this ballad reminds us that even if we fall, we are young as we chase our dreams. (Genius)

“Forever we are young

Even when I fall and hurt myself

I keep running toward my dream.”

10. So Far Away – Agust D ft. Suran

So Far Away

  • It is a song that intertwines the rapper’s past experiences and his message for the future.
  • The chorus begins with a wistful tone, speaking the minds of those wishing for a dream to achieve.
  • The second chorus is written in extremely formal Korean dialect, the kind found in prayer rituals and other such important literature. The very meaning of the verse acts almost like a prayer – a continuous chant to keep walking. (Kim Seokjinnie)

“Dream, your beginnings will seem humble,

So prosperous your future will be.”
